The Taekwondo Club instructors are selected from the club membership on the basis of their prior experience (rank), teaching ability and commitment. Our instructors volunteer their time out of passion for the art of Taekwondo, an interest in learning from other club members, and a dedication to teaching.
Nathan Schine (4th Dan)
Nathan Schine began his training in Taekwondo training in 2001 under Grandmaster Katherine Wieczerza in Nashville, TN, earning his 4th Dan in 2010. He began instructing classes in 2007 and led his undergraduate college's Taekwondo club as head instructor from 2011-2013. Nathan has been a member of the U of C Taekwondo club since 2013 and is currently a PhD candidate in Physics.
Tim Sontag (1st Dan)
Tim began his Tae Kwon Do training in 1994 as an undergrad with the MIT Tae Kwon Do club under the instruction of Sabumnim Young-Soo Ha. After a short break for grad school, Tim returned to Tae Kwon Do with the U of C Tae Kwon Do club where he received his black belt under Dan Kimmel (4th Dan) and George Weyer (3rd Dan). Tim has been a member of the club since 2006 during his postdoctoral fellowship in the department of Pathology at UofC. He recently left the academic side of the university to join a Chicago-based biotech company but still stays active with the Tae Kwon Do club and maybe someday will decide to test for his 2nd Dan belt.
Valeri Galtsev (1st Dan)
Valeri started practicing Tae Kwon Do in 2011 at the University of Chicago Tae Kwon Do club and earned his 1st Dan black belt in 2015. His martial arts experience includes: Shotokan Karate: 1984 - 1990 (Moscow), 2010 - 2011 (University of Chicago Shotokan Karate club); SAMBO (Russian martial art, abbreviation for "Self Defense Without Weapons" largely derived from Judo): 1977 - 1980; combat SAMBO: 1981 -1983. He started working at the University of Chicago as a researcher in 1997, he currently is a (computer) system administrator of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. He lives in Hyde Park in Chicago.
Clare Singer (2nd Dan)
Clare began her Taekwondo training in 2009 under Grandmaster Choi at US Royal Martial Arts in Rockville, Maryland. She earned her 2nd Dan in 2013. Clare joined the U of C Taekwondo club in 2014 and is physics major in the college.
Alexei Fedkin (1st Dan)
Alex is originally from the Moscow suburbs of Russia. He enjoys many sports and was actively involved in track and field, long distance running, and cross-country skiing. He was also interested in Martial Arts but it was when he came to the U.S. that it became a passion. Inspired by beautiful Martial Arts choreographies and motivated to improve his flexibility and learn kicking techniques, Alex started practicing Tae Kwon Do in 2004 at the University of Chicago Tae Kwon Do club and earned his 1st Dan black belt in 2009. Since then, he has been associated with the club as an instructor and has always been very happy to be part of it. Currently Alex works as a Research Scientist in Cosmochemistry at the Department of Geophysical Sciences at the U of C.
Dan Kimmel (Head Instructor) (4th Dan)
Dan Kimmel, hailing from the Way of Action Tae Kwon Do studio in Brooklyn, NY (under Master Linda Lutes, affiliated with Grand Master Sihak Henry Cho), has been practicing Tae Kwon Do since January of 1993 and been involved in teaching it since 1995. He received his 4th Dan black belt from Grandmaster Cho in December of 2008. He is proud to be a part of the University of Chicago Tae Kwon Do club, because without Tae Kwon Do, he would surely go insane. Dan has been a member of the U of C TKD club since 2002 and is currently a PhD student in Sociology.
George Weyer (Instructor at Large) (3rd Dan R)
Inspired by watching the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, George and his brothers began their Tae Kwon Do training in 1991. They were students in the Burlington, IA branch of the American Chungdokwan Taekwondo Association (ACTA). George received his recomendation for 3rd Dan from the ACTA in 2002 under Grandmaster In Mook Kim. Also, in 2003, he spent several months as a visiting student in Gimnasio Cho-San, Barcelona. George has been a member of the U of C TKD Club since 2000 and is currently resident physician in the medicine-pediatrics program at U of C.
Sean Newton (Instructor) (3rd Dan)
Sean started his Taekwondo training in 1996 at Kor-Am Tae Kwon Do in Minneapolis, MN where he trained under Master Scott Lindeberg. He earned his 3rd Dan in 2007. Sean was been a member of the U of C TKD club from 2006-2010 and also trains at Kor-Am during the summers. He graduated from the college in 2010.
Michael received his 3rd Dan in April 2003 under Grandmaster Won Son Jung (Rockford, IL). He was the 2003 USNTF Nationals free sparring champion (lightweight division). He was with the club from 2004-2006.
Robert Krencik (2nd Dan)
Robert received his 1st Dan while at IndianaU and promoted to 2nd Dan under Grandmaster Pak at Iowa State U. He was with the club from 2003-2004.
Monica Chock (1st Dan)
Monica was with the club from 1998-2001.
